100 Mile Elementary

As we head into Spring Break, we hope this time offers families an opportunity to slow down, rest, and reconnect with one another. The shift toward spring is a wonderful reminder to step outside, breathe deeply, and spend time on the land around us. Whether it’s a walk through the forest, time at the park, or simply noticing the small changes that come with the season, these moments help ground us and restore our energy.

February and March have moved through our school quickly—like a mountain creek during spring melt, full of energy and always moving forward. These months have been filled with learning, celebrations, and many wonderful experiences for students. From special events and outdoor learning opportunities to classroom projects and community gatherings, it has been a busy and joyful stretch of time in our school.

Time outdoors supports our wellbeing in many ways—it helps us reset, find balance, and return with renewed focus. We hope our students have opportunities to explore, play, and enjoy the longer days and fresh air.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back after the break, refreshed and ready for the exciting learning and growth that the spring months bring. Wishing all of our families a safe and restorative Spring Break. 🌿

🦫 February Sacred Teaching: Wisdom

Wisdom reminds us that learning comes from experience, listening, and reflection. At school, wisdom shows up when students take time to think through problems, learn from mistakes, and support one another in their learning. In our daily lives, wisdom grows when we listen carefully to others, respect different perspectives, and make thoughtful choices that help our community thrive.

🐢 March Sacred Teaching: Honesty

Honesty encourages us to be truthful with ourselves and with others. At school, honesty looks like taking responsibility for our actions, speaking truthfully, and doing our best work with integrity. In our lives, honesty helps build trust, strong relationships, and a community where everyone feels safe and respected.

❄️ Gavin Lake Winter Camp

Our Grade 6 students recently had the opportunity to attend Gavin Lake Outdoor Education Centre for a winter camp experience. During their time there, students participated in a variety of outdoor learning activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, team-building challenges, and environmental education. These experiences help students build confidence, independence, and cooperation while learning in a beautiful natural setting.

A big thank you to the Gavin Lake staff and our parent chaperones who helped make this memorable learning experience possible for our students.

🎭 Exploring Japanese Masks

Mrs. Helmer and Ms. Jones led students in a fascinating exploration of traditional Japanese masks and their cultural significance. Students learned about the history, symbolism, and artistic styles connected to these masks before applying their learning through hands-on art. The project concluded with students creating molds of their own faces, allowing them to experience the artistic process while expressing creativity and craftsmanship.

🌲 Learning Outside the Classroom 🌲

Many classes continue to take their learning outdoors, making the most of the natural spaces around our school. Activities such as sensory scavenger hunts encourage students to slow down and notice the sights, sounds, textures, and smells of the environment around them.

These experiences help students understand how paying attention to nature can support calm and focus. Learning to notice the small details in the natural world can be a powerful grounding strategy when students need to reset, regulate, or find balance during the day.

🏮 Chinese New Year Celebrations 🏮

Students across the school enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year. Classes explored traditions, stories, and symbols connected to the celebration, including the importance of family, good fortune, and welcoming a new year with hope and positivity. Through activities such as art, cultural learning, and classroom discussions, students gained a deeper appreciation for the traditions celebrated by many communities around the world.

These experiences help students build cultural understanding and curiosity while celebrating the diversity within our school community.

🔬 Science Fair Success 🔬

Our recent Science Fair, led by Mrs. Simcox, was a wonderful celebration of curiosity and learning. With 121 student participants, the gym was filled with creative experiments, thoughtful investigations, and impressive presentations.

It was especially meaningful to welcome families and community members who joined us to explore the projects and support our young scientists. Thank you to Mrs. Simcox for organizing this exciting event and to all of the students who shared their learning with such enthusiasm.

💗 Pink Shirt Day 💗

Our school came together to recognize Pink Shirt Day, a day that reminds us of the importance of kindness, inclusion, and standing up for one another.

Ms. Hunt and her student helpers created a beautiful Kindness Tree, where every student in the school had a flower with their name and a compliment written about them. The display filled our space with positive messages and served as a powerful reminder of the many ways we care for and support one another.

This activity helped strengthen a spirit of connection, belonging, and kindness throughout our school community.
