Welcome Back

Fierce Wolf Vector Logo

Welcome back to school. We hope that the winter break provided time for rest, connection, and a chance to enjoy the season with family and friends. January often brings a natural shift back into routines, and we are pleased to be welcoming students back into classrooms that are calm, supportive, and ready for learning.

As we move into the new term, our focus remains on student wellbeing, belonging, and continued growth—academically, socially, and emotionally. Re-establishing routines, reconnecting with peers and trusted adults, and spending time learning both indoors and outdoors all play an important role in helping students feel regulated and ready to learn during the winter months.

This month, we will continue to emphasize shared expectations and community values, including our focus on the Grandfather Teaching of Love. These teachings guide how we care for ourselves, one another, and our environment, and they help shape a school culture grounded in respect, kindness, and responsibility.

We are grateful for the ongoing partnership with families and the wider community. Your support, communication, and involvement contribute greatly to the positive learning environment we strive to create each day. We look forward to a productive and connected start to the new year and the opportunities ahead.

🦅 Seven Sacred Teachings: Love

This month, our school focus is the Grandfather Teaching of Love. Love reminds us to care for ourselves, one another, and the world around us, and to act with kindness, patience, and respect. This teaching is represented by the Eagle, symbolizing vision and compassion.

Each month, we recognize one student from each class who demonstrates the featured Sacred Teaching through their actions and choices. We are proud to celebrate students who help make our school a caring and connected community.

📚 Family Literacy Week (January 25 – February 1)

We are excited to recognize Family Literacy Week, a province-wide celebration of learning together as families. This year’s theme, “Make mealtime family learning time,” highlights how everyday moments—such as cooking, reading recipes, sharing stories, and talking together—can support literacy development at home.

Look for simple literacy activities coming home that families can enjoy together.

🏀 Basketball Is Back!

Basketball practices will be starting next week. A big thank you to Mr. Plante, Mr. Feissli, and Ms. Hunt for volunteering their time and energy to support our athletes.

We are looking ahead to tournaments in March, and as always, we will be inviting other schools to join us for friendly basketball play dates, giving students opportunities to play, learn, and connect through sport.

⛸️ Upcoming Skating Field Trips

We have skating field trips coming up soon. Permission forms will be sent home this week and next. Please take some time to dig out skates and helmets and ensure everything still fits and is ready to go. More details will be shared as forms come home.

🎿 Ski Trip to Mt. Timothy

We are looking forward to an upcoming ski trip to Mt. Timothy. A huge thank you to Mrs. Simcox for organizing this exciting outdoor learning opportunity for our students. We appreciate the time and care it takes to make experiences like this possible.

🌲 Learning Beyond the Classroom

Ms. Dolinski regularly takes her students outside to enjoy time at the park. Learning to play safely in different environments is an important life skill and supports healthy living, awareness, and a growing appreciation for the outdoors. These experiences help build confidence and wellbeing beyond the classroom.

🌍 Canadian Geographic Challenge

We’re excited to share that our school will once again be taking part in the Canadian Geographic Challenge, hosted right here at École 100 Mile Elementary! The Challenge is being run by Mr. Feissli, who brings great energy and enthusiasm to helping students explore the world through geography. Even more exciting, we will also be hosting an interschool Canadian Geographic Challenge event, welcoming students from schools across the district to compete, learn, and celebrate their geographic knowledge together. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our learners to challenge themselves, connect with others, and show pride in their learning.

Ms. Craig has already gotten to work practicing with students for the Canadian Geographic Challenge. We love seeing learners building geography skills, curiosity, and confidence as they prepare for this national competition.

➗ Math Learning in Action

Mrs. Helmer’s class has been working on operations with fractions, strengthening number sense through problem solving, discussion, and hands-on practice.

🧩 Brain Breaks That Build Thinking

Ms. Speers’ class regularly uses puzzles as brain breaks. Puzzles help students reset their focus while building problem-solving skills, perseverance, and spatial reasoning. These short breaks support self-regulation and help students return to learning ready to engage.

📣 Friday Assembly

This Friday, we will gather for a school-wide assembly focused on looking ahead and reviewing our Code of Conduct. We will revisit shared expectations, celebrate positive choices, and set ourselves up for a strong and connected stretch ahead.

🧪 A Magical Finish to Novel Study 🧪

Mrs. McClusky’s class recently wrapped up their Harry Potter novel study with a special “potions” lesson in Science. Students applied their learning through hands-on exploration, making connections between storytelling, creativity, and scientific thinking in an engaging and memorable way.

💗💗💗 Pink Shirt Day 💗💗💗

We will be recognizing Pink Shirt Day this month as a reminder of our shared responsibility to stand up against bullying and to treat one another with kindness, respect, and compassion. Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink as a visible show of support for inclusion and belonging.

🍽️ Hot Lunch Ordering Reminder

Hot lunch ordering is now open for this month and next. Please be sure to place orders before the deadlines so students don’t miss out.

❄️ Winter Gear Reminder

As winter continues, please remember to send students to school dressed for the weather. Warm jackets, snow pants, boots, mitts, and hats help ensure students can enjoy outdoor learning and play comfortably. We also recommend packing extra clothes, as snowy and wet conditions are part of winter days.
